Red Sox/Rays Preview

The Boston Red Sox travel to Tropicana Field in Tampa (St. Petersburg technically) to play a 4 game series against the Rays. Is it just me, or does it not feel like every time you turn around, the Rays, Yankees or Red Sox are playing each other. The Rays are off to a tough start, 8-14, and really need to start getting things turned around quickly, otherwise Boston could bury them early. The Red Sox had their 11 game winning streak snapped on Tuesday, but come back Wednesday and rally for a 6-5 win in Cleveland to win the series. Probable Starters are:

Thursday, April 30

BOS Josh Beckett (2-1, 6.00)
vs.
TPA Matt Garza (1-2, 4.97)

Friday, May 1

BOS Justin Masterson (2-0, 2.70)
vs.
TPA Andy Sonnanstine (0-3, 7.78)

Saturday, May 2

Bos Tim Wakefield (2-1, 1.86)
vs.
TPA Jeff Niemann (2-2, 4.43)

Sunday, May 3

BOS Brad Penny (2-0, 8.66)
vs.
TPA James Shields (2-2, 3.74)

Cards/Nats Preview

The best team in Major League Baseball, the St. Louis Cardinals travel to Washington to take on the worst team in baseball, the Nationals. The Cardinals are coming from Atlanta, where the Redbirds took 2 out of 3. The Nats come home after finishing up a 6 game road trip, the last 3 games being played in Philadelphia. The Nats were able to salvage game 3 of the series to avoid the sweep. Nationals thirdbaseman Ryan Zimmerman comes into the series with a club record 18 game hitting streak. St. Louis Cardinals All World 1st Baseman Albert Pujols comes into the series tied for 2nd in the NL in homers with 7 and leads the league in RBI's with 26. Pitching Probables for the 4 game set are:

Thursday April 30

vs.
WSH Daniel Cabrera (0-2, 4.42)

Friday, May 1

Zack Greinke (Kansas City Royals)

What else can I say? This kid is amazing. Although he gave up his first earned run(s) tonight, he still will have the best in baseball and is the first to reach 5 wins. I blame the run on the curse of the Sports Illustrated cover, which the latest edition conveniently came out today. (Anybody in Kansas City knows the curse, as well as all around the country.) Greinke came out and pitched 7 innings giving up 5 hits and 2 runs. This made his 0.00 ERA move to 0.50, which is still amazing. The rest of the team is trying to play up to Zack's pitching, with Tuesday's game appearing to be a fluke after losing 1-8, but Monday's game a win 7-1 and tonight a whopping 11-3. This last one was a huge boost of confidence for the Royals and they are looking to take the series from one of the best teams in baseball. Billy Butler stepped up and hit two homers tonight and scored 4 times. How about this Alberto Callaspo kid? He is now ranked 9th in the majors with a batting average of .375, but had the number three in the AL spot for a short time. He wasn't even supposed to be out there. Trey planned on him only being a bench player, but Alex Gordon got hurt and moved Mark Teahen from 2nd to 3rd. They stuck Callaspo in and he ended up having a ten game hitting streak, ending this past Tuesday, but he then continued with 2 hits tonight. The Royals record is now (11-10) and with more consistency on the mound and more success at the plate, the Royals are still hungry for the top spot in the AL central. The last game of the series will be played tomorrow at 1:10pm CT at Kauffman, with Kyle Davies up for the Royals, and Brian Burres for the Blue Jays (ERA 12.46, 0-1).

After the Blue Jays the Royals move on to the Minnesota Twins at the Metrodome.

BLBB's Extra Innings Recap

To start off this article, I would just like to say a few things to the Florida Marlins. Thanks a lot for making me look bad guys. I try and give you so props and you go and lose six straight. Real mature guys.

Who's Hot
Boston Red Sox
The Sox are really playing great baseball right now. They swept their series against the Yankees this weekend and have won 10 in a row heading into an early week series with the Indians. Jacoby Ellsbury had arguably the play of the week in baseball with his stealing of home in last nights game and they are scoring a ton of runs, averaging nine over their last six games. Obviously it was huge for them to beat the Yankees because any game won within the AL East this year is going to be huge with Boston, New York and Tampa expected to contend (and the Blue Jays looking good early)
HONORABLE MENTION: Toronto Blue Jays (14-6); St. Louis Cardinals (13-6); LA Dodgers (13-6)

Kevin Youkilis
Yooooook has been smoking hot over the Red Sox winning streak hitting safely 13 times in eight of the ten games. His season average sits at a solid .439 and he has also racked up 5 bombs and 13 RBI's. His walkoff jack in the 11th during the first game of the series with the Yankees was huge and he is driving this team right now by hitting and scoring runs.
HONORABLE MENTION: Albert Pujols .343, 7 HR, 25 RBI; Ian Kinsler .359, 7 HR, 20 RBI

Roy Halladay
This one was tough but I'm taking Halladay over Chad Billingsley. Halladay has been huge in helping the Blue Jays take the lead in the AL East with four wins in five starts. In those five starts he has sat down 32 and accumulated a 3.75 ERA. The ERA could be lower but I'm taking Roy on the fact that he has pitched great to help get Toronto where they are right now.
HONORABLE MENTION: Chad Billingsley (4-0), 2.05 ERA, 26 K's; Zack Greinke (4-0) 0.00 ERA, 36 K's (really hard not to pick him)

Who's Not
Florida Marlins
How can the Marlins not be mentioned again this week? Only this time it's a bad mention. Thanks a lot for making me look bad guys. You go 11-1 and then have the chance to really open a sizeable lead in the NL East but nope. You drop six in a row this week to move to 11-7. Lucky for you, you are still in 1st place but if Matt Lindstrom continues to impersonate the Washington Nationals and give up seven runs in the 9th inning of a game you lead, well things are going to look like this often. Killin me.
DISHONORABLE MENTION: Washington Nationals (4-13); Tampa Bay Rays (7-12)

Jimmy Rollins
Maybe Jimmy is still feeling the effects of those balls from the JUGS machine in the Dick's commercial. Rollins is really struggling, hitting less than his weight at .159ish (games are going on right now). He only has five RBI's and one homer in 17 games this season. Not sure what's wrong with him but the Phillies will need him to pick things up to get out of the NL East again.
DISHONORABLE MENTION: Geovany Soto .128, 0 HR, 2 RBI; Ken Griffey Jr. .192, 2 HR, 3 RBI, 11 K's

Justin Verlander
Four starts for one of the Tigers top pitchers and no wins. His ERA sits at 9.00 but he has struck out 25 so that is one positive sign. However, he has only pitched 21.0 innings in those four starts and has given up the same number of ER's. Look for him to get better, the signs are there with the K's but it may not be for a little.
DISHONORABLE MENTION: Oliver Perez (1-2), 9.31 ERA. 15 BB, 20 ER in 19.1 IP; Chien-Ming Wang, on the DL

Kansas City Royals Preview

I know you were all waiting, so sorry for the short break. And I don't know if you can count this as a preview since one game has gone though, but I'll go ahead and preview the next 2 games. The Royals took 2 of 3 from Texas the series before, and are/were looking to win the series again against the Tribe. Pitching has been pretty good from the top 3, but once Ponson got down last night, he could not get out of it. Our offense almost brought us back, and we got to see Tejada, Ramirez, Farnsworth and Cruz all pitch to help get us out, but we just couldn't pull this one out. When the other team turns 6 double-plays in as many consecutive innings, you are probably not feeling very confident either. There seems to be more positive news for the boys in blue though, with Brian Bannister coming back from AAA to pitch tonight, and Doug Waechter being put on the 15-day DL. With Banny back and hopefully some shuffling in the bull pen, things should look better these next games. Who can forget to mention Zack Greinke's great pitching against Texas, who was tied for AL player of the week last week. He has pitched 20 scoreless innings so far.

Game 2
Wednesday April 22, 2009 at 6:05pm CT vs. Cleveland Indians
KC Brian Bannister (0-0), vs. CLE Cliff Lee (1-2)

Game 3
Thursday April 23, 2009 at 11:05am CT vs. Cleveland Indians
KC Gil Meche (1-0), vs. CLE Anthony Reyes (0-0)

After losing 7 to 8 in yesterday's game, and losing the last game of the series against Texas, the Royals are looking for a win. Expect large bats, and great pitching, it seems we finally are hitting, with guys like Jacobs hitting when we really need it. Some not so good news is that Alex Gordon, Jose Guillen, and Doug Waechter are all on the DL.

Cards Acquire Reliever from Braves

The St. Louis Cardinals have traded Triple A outfielder Brian Barton to the Atlanta Braves for right handed reliever Blaine Boyer. The Cardinals are hoping Boyer can help a bullpen that is already seeing a repeat of 2008, blowing leads late in games. The Cardinals wasted no time at all trying to eclipse their major league record of 31 blown saves in 2008 - by doing the same thing on opening day - this time the culprit was rookie reliever Jason Motte. Motte has great stuff, but for an organization like the Cardinals to not go out and get an established closer during the off season knowing how bad the 'pen' was in '08...it's just not fair to the stars on this team, Pujols, Wainwright, Molina, etc.

During the first half of 2008, Boyer pitched 52 2/3 innings, he posted 45 strikeouts while only allowing 18 walks with a 3.93 ERA. But he faded down the stretch in 2008 - so this may be a better trade than first thought. This guy sounds like a player Dave Duncan loves. A buy low guy, that can flourish under the tutelage of Duncan.

BLBB's Extra Innings Recap

So, I wanted to make a post like this last week but it is kind of hard to get a solid judgement on the season after one week so I decided to wait until this week. Still the season is just over two weeks old so a lot of what I'm about to say applies for all of likely three or four days max.

Who's Hot

Florida Marlins
How can the Marlins not be the first thing mentioned here. We talked a bit on our preview podcast for the NL East about Florida being a sleeper but I'm not sure anyone legitamitely thought the Marlins would be sitting at 11-1 after the first two weeks of the season. Let's not forget that six of those wins came against the, how do I put this nicely, abominable Washington Nationals (see Who's Not). Give credit to them though after coming back to win three straight games that they were down in the 9th inning. They take on an okay Pirates team in Pittsburgh in the early part of this week so they could go into their first series with the defending champs with only one or two losses.
HONORABLE MENTION: San Diego Padres (9-4); Toronto Blue Jays (10-4)

Carlos Quentin, White Sox, LF
Quentin is currently crushing the ball. His seven homers in 12 games so far this season lead the majors. He is also hitting a good .302. Quentin has also ammassed 13 RBI, six K's, and has been walked seven times. He could continue this hot streak this weak against what could be a tired Orioles team who are wrapping up a series at Fenway on Monday.
HONORABLE MENTION: Miguel Cabrera, .489, 4 HR, 12 RBI; Ian Kinsler, .460, 4 HR, 14 RBI, 6 SB, one cycle

Zack Grienke, Royals, SP
I like this guy. He spells his name the correct way instead of spelling it Zatch. Anyway, he has had one heck of a start to the season so far. He has gotten the win in all three of his starts so far this campaign with his most recent outing being a complete game shutout of a very powerful Rangers team. Let's not forget that he has 26 K's in 20.0 IP and oh yeah, an ERA of 0.00. I'll take it.
HONORABLE MENTION: Roy Halladay (3-0), 3.00 ERA, 17 K's; Heath Bell, 7 saves in 7 games, 0.00 ERA

Who's Not

Washington Nationals
Do I really have to explain my reasoning on this one? If you just answered yes, I'm not sure why but, here you go: 1-10 record, a -21 runs scored difference, and three 9th inning leads that were blown. Safe to say that's not gonna get it done in the big leagues.
DISHONORABLE MENTION: Cleveland (4-9), Arizona Diamondbacks (4-8)

David Ortiz, Red Sox, DH
Big Papi has not started off this season well and neither have the Red Sox really. Ortiz currently has just 10 hits in 51 AB's for a .196 avg. He has only driven in six and has whiffed 15 times so far. The Sox are playing right now and his stats keep changing on me so when you read this his numbers likely will have changed, but the message is the same. I fully expect him to pick it up as the season progresses.
DISHONORABLE MENTION: Hideki Matsui, .194, 1 HR, 3 RBI in 11 games; Jimmy Rollins, .152, 1 HR, 4 RBI in 11 games

Chien-Ming Wang, Yankees, SP
Well this was easy. Wang is KILLING my fantasy team. Thanks Chien-Ming. Three losses in three starts, less K's in those three games, two, than games played, and an ERA through the roof at 34.50. Did I mention 23 earned in six, that's right, six IP. Brutal. Step it up Wang, Derby City Boys need your help.
DISHONORABLE MENTION: Tim Lincecum (0-1) in 3 starts, 3.86 ERA; Aaron Cook (0-0) in 3 starts, ERA 10.22, 12.1 IP, 14 ER

Cards/Cubs Review & Birds/Mets Preview

The St. Louis Cardinals lost 2 of 3 against the Chicago Cubs over the weekend, and Sunday night's game versus the Cubs was rained out and rescheduled as a day-night doubleheader on July 12th. Even though they lost the series, the Cardinals continue to pound the baseball - they have only sored less than 4 runs in a game 3 times in their first 13 games - and they are 3-0 in those games. In this team gets pitching - they are going to win a lot of games this year and possibly compete for a Division title. The New York Mets come to town on Tuesday for a 3 game series at Busch Stadium - and the pitching probables are:

Tuesday, April 21st

NYM Oliver Perez (1-1, 7.84) Perez won his first game of the year over the San Diego Padres in his last start. Lefties always give the Birds trouble and Perez is no different.

vs.

STL Todd Wellemeyer (1-1, 4.50) Wellemeyer's 2nd start of the season went much better than the first, but he will be working on 7 days rest. Will the long layoff hurt him? Command has never been Todd's strong suit.

Wednesday, April 22nd

NYM John Maine (0-1, 7.20) Maine gave up 6 runs in 5 innings against the Padres in his first loss of the year.

vs.

STL Joel Pineiro (2-0, 5.40) The Cardinals have won both of Pineiro starts, plus Pineiro is a much better pitcher at home than he is on the road.

Thursday, April 23rd

NYM Livan Hernandez (1-0, 4.63) Hernandez does what all #5 starters are expected to do - just give your team a chance to win. Hernandez is 5-5 in 16 career starts versus the Birds with a 4.33 ERA.

vs.

STL Kyle Lohse (2-0, 2.57) The good news for Lohse, similar to Pineiro, has always fared much better at Busch Stadium. The bad news - he has never pitched well against the Mets, something needs to give.

Rays Wrap up 7 Game Homestand/Preview of Rays/M's Series

The Tampa Bay Rays first homestand of the season did not go as planned. They went 2-5 against the New York Yankees and the Chicago White Sox, plus to make things worse, centerfielder BJ Upton left Sunday's game in the 2nd inning with a strained right quad. He will be re-evaluated on Monday. The Rays allowed 44 runs during the 7 game homestand...and that is just not going to get it done. I think their are 2 big questions right now - #1 How long until playoff hero and pitching phenom David Price gets recalled and #2 Did Joe Maddon make the right call sending David to the minors to start the year...right now - it looks like Maddon has made a big mistake. Now the Rays head West for 9 games on the road, 3 each against the Seattle Mariners, Oakland Athletics and the Minnesota Twins. Probable pitching matchups for the Mariners series are:

Tuesday April 21st

TPA Andy Sonnanstine (0-1, 6.52)Andy is 1-1 in 3 career starts versus the M's with an ERA of 2.66, but is 1-0 with a 1.26 ERA at Safeco Field.

vs.

SEA Jarrod Washburn (2-0, 1.29) Washburn has been very effective and also efficient in his first 2 starts of the year, and this is a very rare thing for a pitcher that never lived up to the hype. Look for the Rays to give Jarrod his first loss of the year on Tuesday night in Seattle.

Wednesday, April 22nd

TPA Jeff Niemann (0-2, 6.35) Niemann improved in his 2nd outing of the year, but still gave up 9 hits in 6 innings of work. He needs to continue to improve, or Mr. Price will be starting in this slot very soon. Jeff has never faced the M's.

vs.

SEA Chris Jakubauskas (1-1, 3.86) This 30 year old rookie has been pushed into the starting rotation while Ryan Rowland-Smith recovers from tricep tendinitis.

Thursday, April 23rd

TPA James Shields (2-1, 4.58) Shields is 1-1 with a 2.12 ERA in 4 starts against the M's in his career. Plus he was 1-0 in Safeco last year.

vs.

Felix Hernandez (2-0, 4.26) In 5 starts versus the Rays in his career, Felix is 1-1 with a 2.54 ERA. Look for the Rays to get out of town quickly in this pitchers duel on getaway day.

Cards Review and the Big 4 Game Series at Wrigley Preview

The Cardinals went to Arizona and took 2 of 3 - and if the Redbirds had a manager with any common sense at all - they would have swept the series. The Cardinals lost game 2 of the series 7-6 in 10 innings. Three very questionable decisions - and the most glaring was allowing Brendan Ryan to hit in the 9th in a 6-6 game with the bases loaded and 1 out - and Ryan Ludwick sitting on the bench. Ryan struck out....what a surprise. On to the 4 game series against the Chicago Cubs:

Thursday, April 16

STL Adam Wainwright (1-0, 1.74) Pretty scary that most experts are saying that Wainwright still has pitched too well at this point...his ERA is under 2.00 - what is he going to be like when he does find a groove...Bob Gibson?

vs.

CHC Sean Marshall (0-0, 0.00) Season debut, Marshall is 2-1 lifetime vs. the Cardinals with a 3.38 ERA.

Friday, April 17

STL Kyle Lohse (2-0, 1.13) Lohse is coming off a complete game against the Houston Astros on Easter. He has been money in his first two starts.

vs.

Carlos Zambrano (1-0, 3.00) Big Z was 7-2 at Wrigley Field in 2008, but was 1-2 with a 12.75 ERA against the Cards in 2008.

Saturday, April 18

STL Todd Wellemeyer (1-1, 4.50) Wellemeyer only allowed 1 run in 7 innings in his outing on Monday vs. the D'Backs en route to his first victory of the year.

vs.

CHC Ryan Dempster (1-0, 4.50) Dempster picked up the win over the Brewers on Monday to get into the win column in 2009, and half the win should have went to Reed Johnson for robbing Prince Fielder of Milwaukee of a Grand Slam. Ryan was 14-3 at Wrigley in 2008.

Sunday, April 19

STL TBA - With the loss of Chris Carpenter to injury - this start is up in the air.

vs.

CHC Ted Lilly (2-0, 3.86) Soft tossing lefties have always given the Cardinals fits...enter Ted Lilly. Lilly was 3-0 with a 3.06 ERA against the Redbirds in 2008.

Rays Review/Preview

The Tampa Bay Rays opened their home schedule with a bang...rocking the New York Yankees 15-5 in their home opener and BJ Upton's season debut. But the Yankees take the last 2 games of the series to win the series. Now the Chicago White Sox come to Tampa for a 4 game series that starts tonight. Probable pitching matchups are:

Thursday, April 16

CHW John Danks (0-0, 0.00) Danks threw 6 innings of shutout ball last Thursday vs. the Kansas City Royals in his season debut. In 2008, Danks was 2-1 with a 1.86 ERA against the Rays and is 3-1 lifetime.

vs.

TPA Jeff Niemann (0-1, 10.13) Niemann had the season debut jitters on Saturday vs. the Baltimore Orioles, giving up 5 runs in the 1st inning, but after that, he didn't allow a run into the 5th. One career start against the White Sox - 0-1 with a 13.50 ERA.

Friday, April 17

CHW Bartolo Colon (1-0, 0.00) Colon threw 6 innings of shutout ball in the White Sox's 8-0 win versus the Minnesota Twins on Saturday. Colon has a 9-2 record lifetime versus the Rays.

vs.

TPA James Shields (1-1, 3.65) On Sunday, Shields held the Orioles to just 3 hits and no runs to even his record at 1-1. Shields is 0-1 in his regular season career against the Chi Sox, but he did win the opening game of the Division Series last Fall to help the Rays get their first playoff win in team history.

Saturday, April 18

CHW Mark Buerhle (1-0, 2.38) In Buerhle's last start, he went 6+ innings allowing only 1 run on 2 hits...masterful. Lifetime vs. the Rays...6-2 with a 4.24 ERA.

vs.

TPA Scott Kazmir (2-0, 2.84)
Kaz is off to a great start in '09 - he is one of a very few that won both of his starts to begin the season. Kazmir was 1-0 in 2008 vs. the White Sox with a 2.08 ERA.

Sunday, April 19

CHW Gavin Floyd (1-1, 6.00) Floyd was brilliant in his first start of the season, but picked up the loss. He fought his control in his 2nd start of the season, but was backed by plenty of run support and picked up the win - baseball is a funny game. He has never faced the Rays in the regular season, but did lose to them in Game 4 of the Division Series last fall.

vs.

TPA Matt Garza (1-0, 1.93) Garza is 2 for 2 in quality starts on the young season, and has looked great in both outings. Garza is 1-1 with a 4.97 ERA in 3 career starts versus the south siders.

Pirates acquire Delwyn Young from Dodgers

MLB.com is reporting that the Pittsburgh Pirates have traded two players to be named later for Dodgers outfielder Delwyn Young. Young, 26, is a player the Pirates have coveted for awhile now and was a main asking piece in all the off-season discussions involving Jack Wilson.

Young spent all of last year with the Dodgers as a 4th outfielder and batted .246 in 126 AB. His career numbers in the majors are .267/.330/.394. He was ranked by Baseball America as the #9 prospect in the Dodgers system in 2008. He has crushed the ball throughout the minors and his numbers there are great.

Hopefully the guys the Bucs will ultimately give up aren't much. If that's the case, then this is a steal for the Pirates as it gives them someone who has shown in the minors he's capable of putting up some decent number. Perhaps he can get it all together at the ML level.

Most likely, OF Craig Monroe will get DFA'd or released due to this trade in order to make room for Young on the 40-man roster. I am totally fine with that if it were to happen because Young > Monroe.

I'll update this post as more info comes in.

Also, congratulations to Paul Konerko and Jermaine Dye on hitting their 300th HR's yesterday. The best part is that it was back to back. And finally, on a sadder note, the BLBB wants to extend their condolences to the Phillies organization and also the family of George Kalas after he passed away yesterday. Have a good day everyone.

Kansas City Royals Review/Preview

Things were looking up for the Royals coming into this past series with the Yankees. Then we started to see more of the same thing we saw last year, and even in the latest games against Chicago. The guys who need to start hitting couldn't do it, at least not early. Guys like Mike Jacobs and Alex Gordon aren't smacking the ball like they can. We are still leaving way too many guys on base, this speaks to the bottom end of the line-up mostly, so we'll see where that goes. Jose Guillen is still on the 15-day DL with a partially torn hip flexor. Alex Gordon was out yesterday with a stiff hip, but is expected to be back in tonight's game. There was some light at the end of the tunnel, with the offense putting up 6 runs to beat the Yanks 6 to 4 on Sunday, with the help of John Buck firing everyone up with a solo shot to left in the bottom of the third with one out. He's now hitting .500 and went 3 for 4 yesterday. This seemed to have kicked the other guys into gear, and Brayan Pena came in and hit a double, as did Buck and Teahen. Coco Crisp hit a triple as well. The Royals now look forward to a three-game home set against the Cleveland Indians.

Game 1
Monday April 13, 2009 at 7:10pm CT vs. Cleveland Indians
KC Zack Greinke (1-0), vs. CLE Fausto Carmona (0-1)

Game 2
Tuesday April 14, 2009 at 7:10pm CT vs. Cleveland Indians
KC Kyle Davies (0-0), vs. CLE Carl Pavano (0-1)

Game 3
Wednesday April 15, 2009 at 1:10 CT vs. Cleveland Indians
KC Sidney Ponson (0-1), vs. CLE Jeremy Sowers (0-0)

This should be a much better performance from the boys in blue, especially since the Indians are now 1-5 and we seem to be finding our offensive stride. Pitching should not be a worry at all, with Greinke looking to show another great performance, along with Davies and Sidney Ponson, who, surprisingly isn't as bad as people thought. I know I called for a sweep for the Royals against the Yankees, but I think this time it will actually happen. Now we just need Buck, Teahen, Gordon, Crisp, and the other guys to connect and not leave any guys on base.

Rays Lose 2 out of 3 vs. Orioles...Prepare for Home Opener vs. Yankees

The Tampa Bay Rays salvaged the last game of a 3 game series at Baltimore against the Orioles to get back to .500 (3-3) on the year. Evan Longoria continues to kill AL East pitching, by hitting his 5th homer in 6 games and raising his batting average to .481 in the young season. Now the Rays head back to Tampa for their home opener in a 3 game series against the New York Yankees. Tampa also gets great news when they get back, BJ Upton, Tampa's October hero last year during the playoffs (7 bombs hit during the playoffs last year), comes off the DL and will fit perfectly into this lineup. You throw him back into this lineup with Carl Crawford and Longoria - this team might try to do the unthinkable - compete for the AL East crown...AGAIN!!

Monday, April 13th

NYY Chien-Ming Wang (0-1, 17.18) In Wang's season debut - he was rocked by the O's. He gave up 9 hits and 7 runs in 3 2/3 innings pitched in his first outing since season ending surgery last June. The good sign is that Wang is 1-0 in two starts last year with a 0.69 ERA against the Rays last year.

vs.

TPA Scott Kazmir (1-0, 1.50)
Kazmir has never been an efficient pitcher, but he is dominant in the innings he pitches. Kazmir went 6 innings and threw 111 pitches in 6 innings in his season debut at Fenway. He allowed one run on 5 hits and picked up the win. The guy is money on the mound, but rarely can go more than 6 innings because of his inefficiency. In my opinion, the Rays would be an even better ball club by putting David Price in the rotation and make Kazmir the closer...he would be the new Billy Wagner...and Billy was the most dominant left handed closer in baseball for years.

*Tuesday, April 14th - This game might be the best of the series

NYY AJ Burnett (1-0, 3.38) Burnett won his Yankee debut with a win over the O's, but he was disappointed with only lasting 5 1/3 innings. I have a feeling he will be very good on Tuesday night. Burnett is 27-8 in 46 career starts against AL East foes and the last time he faced Tampa, Burnett went 7 innings, allowing only 3 hits and 1 run in a win for Toronto.

vs.

TPA Matt Garza (1-0, 1.29) Garza won his season debut against the Red Sox and also showed why he has the best stuff on the staff. His fastball sets up his breaking ball and changeup, and if he can figure out how to pitch deep into games when one of his pitches isn't working...this guy will be the ace of the Rays for years to come. Garza is 7-3 in 15 career starts at Tropicana Field with a 2.89 ERA.

Wednesday, April 15th

NYY Andy Pettitte (1-0, 1.29) Pettitte went 7 innings in his win over the Kansas City Royals in his season debut, and only allowed 1 run while striking out 6. In his career vs. Tampa, Andy is 15-4 with a 3.63ERA.

vs.

TPA Andy Sonnanstine (0-1, 9.64) Sonnanstine went 4 2/3 vs. the Orioles in his season debut, giving up 5 runs on 8 hits. Not a good start when phenom David Price is lurking down at Triple A. Andy is 2-1 with a 6.08 ERA in his career vs. the Yankees. This is going to be a tough game to win for the Rays on Wednesday.

Digg!

Cards Sweep Astros...Travel to Arizona for 3 Game Series

Kyle Lohse and The St. Louis Cardinals finished off a 3 game sweep of the Houston Astros on Sunday. Lohse gave up a leadoff single and then retired 24 in a row en route to a complete game 3 hit shutout. Khalil Greene led the offense with 3 hits, an RBI and a run scored, plus raised his batting average to .280.

The Cardinals now go on the road for the first time in 2009 and travel to Arizona to take on the Diamondbacks in a 3 game series. The probable starters for the 3 game series are:

Monday, April 13th

STL Todd Wellemeyer (0-1, 9.00) Wellemeyer hasn't pitched well at all in 2009 and that includes spring training. And if you have been reading the BLBB, I told you in my Cardinals preview that Todd would struggle to repeat his 2008 - I'm not sayin...I'm just sayin!

vs.

ARZ Doug Davis (0-1, 7.20) How can't you root for this guy, he beat thyroid cancer last year...nuff said. Plus lefties have always given the Cards fits, look for the D'Backs to take game 1.

Tuesday, April 14th

STL Chris Carpenter (1-0, 0.00) The most important start for a #4 starter in all of baseball, Carpenter did not disappoint. He had a no-hitter into the 7th and went on to win the game 2-1 on Thursday over the Pirates. If Carpenter can stay healthy, he will contend for the NL Cy Young Award - can you say Lock of the Day on Tuesday!?

vs.

ARZ Max Scherzer - Scherzer is making his season debut, unfortunately for him, he draws Carpenter and not Wellemeyer.

Wednesday, April 15th

STL Joel Pineiro (1-0, 2.70) Unfortunately for Pineiro, the World Baseball Classic started about 10 years too late...if Puerto Rico would have pissed this guy off earlier in his career for not being picked to the team, Joel might have been a Hall of Famer.

vs.

ARZ Jon Garland (1-0, 3.86) Free Agent signing Jon Garland won his first game in a D'Backs uniform by beating the NL West rival LA Dodgers. This signing might be even more important than we first thought...Brandon Webb went on the DL on Sunday and if he is on the DL for an extended period of time...Garland may be the #2 behind Dan Haren.

Rays Review and Preview

Matt Garza took the hill today for the Tampa Rays in the rubber game of a 3 game season opening series in Fenway Park against the Boston Red Sox wanting to prove that his 2008 season was not a fluke. He definitely proved to himself, his team that his '08 season was not a fluke, but maybe most importantly proved to all of Major League Baseball that the Rays 2008 season wasn't a fluke either. Garza went 7 innings, while only allowing 1 run on 4 hits. Tampa begins the season taking 2 out of 3 from one of their arch rivals and most importantly it was at Fenway. Now the Rays head to Baltimore, and if they can continue to pitch the way they did in Boston, their is a possibility they could sweep the Orioles and start the season 5-1. The probable starters are listed below:

Friday Night April 10th

TPA Andy Sonnanstine - Andy is making his 1st start of the year and in his career he is 1-1 with a 3.86ERA at Camden Yards

vs.

BAL Mark Hendrickson - Mark was signed to help out the pathetic O's bullpen, but the projected starters were even worse than the bullpen in spring training, so Hendrickson earns a spot in the O's rotation.

Sat. April 11th

TPA Jeff Niemann - Jeff out dueled playoff hero David Price for the #5 spot in the rotation. Both of Niemann's career starts in 2008 came against the O's - and he won both. Not good news for Baltimore.

vs.

BAL Jeremy Guthrie (1-0, 4.50ERA) Jeremy is the ace of the the O's staff. Would he be the #4 or 5 starter on half of the teams in Major League Baseball. He was lucky enough to beat the Yankees on opening day when CC Sabathia had a rare off day. I don't expect luck to hit twice in a row.

Sun. April 12th

TPA James Shields (0-1, 8.44ERA)
Shields was rocked on opening day in Boston, but look for one of the 3 or 4 aces on the Rays staff to bounce back on Sunday. He is 4-1 with a 3.21 ERA in 12 career starts against the Orioles and 2-0 with a 3.14 ERA in six career starts at Camden Yards.

vs.

BAL Adam Eaton - How bad is this Orioles staff? Eaton was so bad in spring training that the Phillies cut him even though he is owed $8 million - and they will pay him not to pitch in their organization. So the Orioles staff is so bad, that they picked this guy up and he is immediately thrown into the starting rotation. Not a good sign for the GM or heck, the whole organization.

Cardinals Review and Preview vs. Astros for the weekend

I attended the St. Louis Cardinals game on Thursday and they were my Lock of the Day. Chris Carpenter didn't disappoint. He threw a 1 hitter threw 7 innings. In fact if former outfielder turned second baseman Skip Schumaker could have made a good throw to Khalil Greene on a routine double play with 1 out in the 7th - I could have seen history. Skip's throw was wide, Greene stayed on the bag - but couldn't make the relay throw. The next batter singled to center - poof - no hitter erased. The Cards bullpen completed the 1 hitter and the Birds beat the Pirates 2-1 to earn a split in the 4 game series.

On to the upcoming 3 game series against the Houston Astros at Busch Stadium. No love lost between these two squads ever since Albert Pujols hit a ball off Brad Lidge in the NLCS in 2005 that is still traveling. The Probable Starters for the 3 game series:

Friday night April 10th

HOU Mike Hampton - Hampton will be trying to throw a full season of innings for the first time since 2004. I love this...it is called KARMA!! Mike Hampton elected to go where the money was in a free agent year years ago - he signed with the Colorado Rockies, a perennial loser instead of taking a million or two less a year and sign for a consistent winner and the St. Louis Cardinals. So every time he throws I hope his arm literally goes farther than the ball...and I'm talking his whole arm.

vs.

STL Joel Pineiro
- Pineiro has been ticked off ever since he was not chosen to pitch for Puerto Rico in the WBC - and ever since then - the guy has been lights out.

Sat. April 11th

HOU Roy Oswalt (0-1, 3.86ERA)
Oswalt is the only major league quality pitcher on the Houston staff, so he bumps the #5 starter, Russ Ortiz, back. Oswalt was 0-1 vs. the Cards last year, but he is 9-6 with a 2.90ERA in his career against the Birds.

vs.

STL Adam Wainwright (0-0, 3.38ERA)
Wainwright was okay in his 1st start of the year, but struggled with his control at times, allowing 5 walks. Look for Adam to bounce back and give a much more Ace like outing.

Sun. April 12th

HOU Wandy Rodriguez (0-0, 1.50ERA)
Lefties have always give the Cardinals fits, and Rodriguez was no different in 2008. He was 1-2 against the Cards, but a 1.11 ERA in four starts - just no run support.

vs.

STL Kyle Lohse (1-0, 2.57ERA) Lohse threw 108 pitches in his first outing of the year against the Pirates earlier in the week. A very rare thing for Manager Tony LaRussa, to allow a pitcher early in the year labor on a high pitch count on a very cold evening at Busch. Will there be any hangover from this?

Kansas City Royals Preview

Well the Royals took 2 out 3 games from the ChiSox last series, and had many positives to talk about. The most important of those being the PITCHING!! Meche, Greinke, Davies, all had tremendous starts, combining for 31 strike-outs so far. Soria and Cruz looked great, as did Ron Mahay. Other things to note are the great defensive plays from David DeJesus and the rest of the D. Now on to the negatives. The Royals have left too many on base so far, and need more offense in the middle of the line-up. Mike Jacobs hasn't produced anything as of yet, so we will see if he can hit his stride. The big question from the first game is what was Trey Hillman thinking putting Kyle Farnsworth in, and taking out Gil Meche, only to have Jim Thome launch a three-run bomb to put the White Sox ahead. Personally, I think it was the right call. You can't be too sure with how cold it was out there how your pitchers are doing and it's better to be safe than sorry. It shouldn't have been left on Farnsworth's shoulders when we left 11 runners on base and no scoring. That's done and over with and we now have the Yankees to look forward to the next 3 days. Friday's the Home Opener, and a newly renovated Kauffman Stadium awaits the Royals.

Game 1
Friday April 10, 2009 at 3:10pm CT vs. New York Yankees
KC Sidney Ponson (0-0), with an '08 ERA of 5.04 vs. NYY Andy Pettitte (0-0)

Game 2
Saturday April 11, 2009 at 6:10pm CT vs. New York Yankees
KC Horacio Ramirez (0-0), an '08 ERA of 4.34 vs. NYY CC Sabathia (0-1)

Game 3
Sunday April 12, 2009 at 1:10 CT vs. New York Yankees
KC Gil Meche (0-0), vs. NYY Joba Chamberlain (0-0)

As mentioned before, the Royals will be home, in a newly renovated stadium with the final touches being put on yesterday and today, and a sold-out crowd looks to be on-hand. I am predicting a series sweep from the Royals with great action from the bullpen and solid hitting.

Pittsburgh Pirates Series Preview

After splitting a 4-game set with the Cardinals, the Bucs take off to Cincinnati to face the Reds in a 3-game series.

Probable Pitchers:
Game 1 - Jeff Karstens (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. Johnny Cueto (0-0, 0.00 ERA)
Game 2 - Paul Maholm (0-0, 1.35 ERA) vs. Micah Owings (0-0, 0.00 ERA)
Game 3 - Ian Snell (0-1, 13.50 ERA) vs. Aaron Harang (0-1, 1.80 ERA)

Expect the teams to split games 2 and 3 with both aces facing not-too-stellar pitchers. Whoever wins the first game of this series will win the series. It's basically a toss-up. Karstens and Cueto both make their first starts of the year. Karstens last year was 2-6 with a 4.03 ERA and is coming off a horrible spring. Cueto is coming off a great spring and was 9-14 last season with a 4.81 ERA.

Pittsburgh is looking to win this series so they can post a winning record in their first road trip of the year before heading back to PNC Park after the game on Sunday.

United Cardinal Bloggers Radio

Last night I appeared on the United Cardinal Bloggers Radio show to discuss the Pirates with some Cardinals bloggers. Check it out if you have the chance. I come on basically during the last 10 minutes of the show.

Angels Pitcher Nick Adenhart

I'm not really sure how to talk abou this one. Angels 22-year old starting pitcher Nick Adenhart passed away passed away early this morning after their car was struck by a minivan that ran a red light. ESPN reported that Adenhart passed away while in surgery. The kid was 22 and had his best outing last night which is really unfortunate. He was drafted by the Angels in 2004 and was going to be relied on this season after being the top prospect in the Angels organization. The angels game on Thursday has been postponed. It's just so sad to see this happen, and is really unfortunate. It should be noted as well I think that the driver who hit Adenhart's car had a bloog alcohol level above the legal limit and also fled the scene of the accident. I know this is a baseball blog but this is just a reminder not to drink and drive. It's really not worth risking something like this. That's all I'll say as far as things unrelated to baseball go. The BLBB Staff sends their condolences to the Angels organization and most importantly the family of Adenhart.
